With its climate-resistant system solutions for buildings and infrastructure, Wienerberger supports the goals of the European Green Deal
Vienna, 21 November 2022 – The frequency of extreme environmental events, such as heat waves or heavy rains and major floods, is increasing due to climate change. The effects of such events present urban areas with increasing challenges and call for sustainable and resilient solutions for building design and infrastructure. With its comprehensive portfolio of innovative system solutions, Wienerberger has positioned itself as a partner helping municipalities cope with extreme weather events, adapt to changing climate conditions and achieve long-term transformation. Over the past ten years, the company has completely shifted its strategy from a manufacturer of standard building envelope products focused on production volumes to a complete supplier of innovative, sustainable and digital system solutions. .
“Since the establishment of our company, we have always strived to improve people’s quality of life with first-class sustainable building materials and infrastructure systems. We develop climate-neutral and circularity-focused solutions to ensure that future generations will have the same opportunities we have today. With brick as a sustainable and environmentally friendly building material, combined with the innovative strength of Wienerberger, we have positioned ourselves as a pioneer in our industry. As a full-service provider, we now offer web- and cloud-based solutions for the entire spectrum of building, water and energy management,” says Heimo Scheuch, Chairman of the Board of administration of Wienerberger AG.
Product system solutions give the climate a chance
Building solutions from Wienerberger contribute significantly to energy savings. Wall systems made of clay, a natural building material, for example, with a useful life of more than 100 years, provide excellent thermal insulation, have a high thermal mass and reduce the overall environmental impact of buildings. In addition, solid brick structures are resistant to environmental influences and extreme events, such as windstorms or floods. As Europe’s leading roof tile producer, Wienerberger focuses on energy-efficient and sustainable system solutions in the fight against climate change.
Measures to avoid overheating
Roof systems, in particular, have to adapt to climate change. Especially in the warm regions of southern and southeastern Europe, Wienerberger is increasingly focusing on tiles in light shades. This minimizes the heat in the building and its surroundings. This improves the quality of life and reduces the need for indoor air conditioning. Wienerberger continues to lead development towards light-colored tile designs and focuses on energy-efficient and cost-effective system solutions.
Wienerberger also innovates in the field of flat roofs. In its European markets, the company exclusively sells the Leadax Roov roofing membrane produced by Leadax, a company based in the Netherlands. Since its production is CO2 neutral, using this roofing membrane for flat roofs significantly reduces the CO2 footprint. Additionally, the membrane is made from 75% recycled plastic waste and can be fully recycled into a new flat roof membrane at the end of its useful life – a perfect example of circular economy.
Preventing Flash Floods with Effective Stormwater Management
All-in-one smart solutions are essential if cities have to deal with high volumes of precipitation. Built surfaces are often made of heat-absorbing and waterproof materials. As a result, almost all precipitation water ends up in public sewer systems and natural cooling mechanisms are lacking due to impeded evaporation and infiltration, which can lead to flooding. In South-Eastern Europe, Wienerberger’s subsidiary, Semmelrock, markets its own storm drainage system, complementing its range of pavers. Raineo®, Wienerberger Pipelife’s stormwater management system, is based on a different concept: water is captured underground, filtered and collected in storage tanks, called Stormboxes. These retain water and avoid overloading the sewer system in the event of heavy rain. The water can then be reused, for example for irrigation, or seep slowly into the ground to keep the groundwater level stable.
In addition, the Wienerberger subsidiaries, Semmelrock and Pipelife, also offer solutions for leaky surfaces with concrete pavers and effective rainwater management, as torrential rains can lead to flooding even on leaky surfaces. Grass pavers in new formats with geometric openings and up to 30% drainage area are just one example. Products like these help cities adapt to changing weather conditions.
Wienerberger Group
The Wienerberger Group is one of the leading international providers of intelligent solutions for the entire building envelope and for infrastructure. Wienerberger is the world’s largest producer of bricks (Porotherm, Terca) and market leader in clay roof tiles (Koramic, Tondach) in Europe and concrete pavers (Semmelrock) in Eastern Europe. In pipe systems (Steinzeug-Keramo ceramic pipes and Pipelife plastic pipes), the company is one of the leading suppliers in Europe. By acquiring Meridian Brick, Wienerberger has further strengthened its position as a leading supplier of facade products in North America. With a total of 216 production sites, the Wienerberger Group generated sales of 4.0 billion euros and an EBITDA LFL of 671 million euros in 2021.
